Spy x Family: Manga Review

The new Bi-weekly Manga on Shounen Jump+ you didn’t think you needed.

Every year new stories, scripts, and ideas enter an abundance of the already competitive entertainment market – and 2019 was no different in Manga.

There were many returning series that came with a bang, such as My Hero Academia. A popular manga with an army of fans waiting to read every chapter; to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, an ongoing manga series that’s recent anime adaption has helped skyrocket its popularity.

Despite that, there is one particular Manga on Shounen Jump+ that’s been taking the industry by storm: Spy x Family. A new Shounen series launched in early March, with 2 volumes under its belt. With just those two volumes, it has sold about 754,067 copies for the year! That is a lot for such a small amount of books! Did I mention that the series is also bi-weekly? Bi-weekly as in, only one chapter is released every two weeks!

Written by Endou Tatsuya, Spy x Family follows agent Twilight (known as the best in the best in his field) who is tasked with an important mission to uncover a secret plot that threatens the peace in his world. But there is a catch, to do that, he must create a family to get close to the target’s son, who happens to attend a prestigious school.

Though, his new made-up family is anything from normal. Twilight (the father) is a spy, Briar (the recruited mother) is an assassin and Anya (the adoptable hilarious six-year-old daughter) is an esper. As you can guess, this dysfunctional family is tasked with helping Twilight save the world with humorous results.

However, in this guise of playing the believable family (the Rogers), you start to see the underlining bonds being formed between the characters. Making you root for them and even treasure them, despite knowing that this is all fake and that Twilight created this for the sole purpose of his mission. But who knows, maybe there is more to Twilight than just missions!

And that folks is why I will continue reading this new series and believe you should too. Let me know what you think in the comments. With only 17 chapters out and two volumes completed, it’s a series that can easily be caught up upon on Shounen Jump or Manga Plus~
